Old Toyota Century, new Toyota Century, both with chauffeurs waiting for their owners to finish shopping.
Later I was
turned down by a Century taxi driver—my money is
too gaijin, I guess?—
and in turn rejected the
E63 cab(!!)
behind him
in favor of a stately old Toyota Crown. This is Japan after all. And someday I’ll get that ride in a Century.

Lol. taxi drivers love me. Taxi dispatch know me by first name and great me with, ‘Hello Sven, where are you going today’ or ‘Hello Sven, where are e taking you today’.
But then again I I always let them keep the change and have cleaned a few of them or given products to them.

For such a technologically advanced country, Japan can be pretty insular and xenophobic.

yeah no shit. It’s not often that I’ve been apologized to about having to be discriminated based on my skin color.
